Is this the right starting point?

Who it is for

The Technology Roadmap fits when more than one thing needs doing and the order matters as much as the work.

  • Several systems need rationalising, and finance, operations and marketing each hold a different version of the truth.
  • An earlier transformation stalled and the remaining plan is no longer credible.
  • A decision between building, buying and configuring has stalled for want of an independent view.
  • You have a budget for the year and need to decide where the first dollar goes.

If you already know what to build and need it priced, the Product Development Plan is the shorter route. Larger programs spanning several stakeholder groups are a digital strategy engagement, scoped and quoted separately.

Roadmap or health check?

The roadmap maps several systems and the manual work between them, scores the options and never reads code. A Platform Health Check reads one platform in depth: its code, infrastructure, security and documentation. If the estate and the order of work is the worry, start here. If one platform is the worry, start with the health check. Where the roadmap names a health check on one platform as its first initiative, the roadmap fee is credited against it.

What you get

What you get

A written roadmap about three weeks after the first workshop, and an hour of playback to go through it.

  • A current-state map: which systems hold which records, what moves between them, and where a person is doing the integrating today.
  • Up to six candidate initiatives scored on commercial impact, implementation effort and organisational readiness.
  • A build, buy or configure recommendation on each, with the reasoning next to it and an indicative band from our published pricing where the answer is build.
  • A sequence over about twelve months, where every stage carries an objective, a measure and a decision gate.

Configuring software you already licence is the cheapest outcome and is recommended wherever it will hold. The roadmap is written to be executed by your own team or another supplier, and it says so where an initiative does not need us.

How it runs

  1. A 30-minute call. We confirm which part of the business the roadmap covers and who needs to be in the workshops. Nothing is invoiced before this call.
  2. Workshop one: the current state. Two hours on the systems in use, the data that moves between them and the manual work holding the gaps together.
  3. Workshop two: the options. Two hours on what could change, evaluated against the requirements written down in the first session rather than against vendor demonstrations.
  4. Authoring. The map, the scoring and the sequence, written in the second week.
  5. Playback, in the third week. An hour on the sequence and the gates.

Trust is critical to our application and National Digital have been outstanding. They have never let us down, respond so quickly and understand our business. I've worked with a lot of different tech companies and National Digital are the best by far.

Why it is built this way

One stage at a time

A twelve-month plan committed up front is a single bet. The same plan with a gate at each stage becomes a series of smaller decisions, each informed by the one before it. Readiness is scored alongside the commercial case because a high-value initiative a business is not ready to absorb fails on adoption rather than on engineering.

The fee is credited in full against the first initiative, a Platform Health Check included, or against a Product Development Plan on the initiative you choose, if either proceeds within 90 days. That is the only commercial link between the roadmap and the work that follows it.

Questions buyers ask

How is this different from a full strategy engagement?
Scale. This is two workshops covering one business unit, sized so a decision can be made in a few weeks. A strategy engagement covers several stakeholder groups, a longer horizon and the change management alongside the technology, and the digital strategy page carries its indicative starting figure.
Do you recommend products you resell?
We resell nothing and take no vendor commissions, so a recommendation to buy carries us no benefit beyond being right. Where we have delivered against a vendor’s platform before, the roadmap says so alongside the recommendation.
What if the answer is that we should do nothing yet?
That is written down with the reasoning, and it is occasionally the right sequence. A business halfway through an ERP replacement usually should not start a second program. The roadmap then states what has to be true before the first initiative begins.
Who needs to be in the workshops?
Whoever owns the systems and whoever owns the processes running on them, which is usually three to five people. Sessions held without the people doing the work produce the documented process rather than the real one.
Does this commit us to building with you?
No. The roadmap is written to be executed by your own team or another supplier, and it says so explicitly where an initiative does not need us. The fee is credited if we deliver the first initiative, which is the only commercial link between the two.
How long does it take?
About three weeks: the two workshops in the first, the authoring in the second, and the playback session in the third.

What a Technology Roadmap costs

A fixed-fee engagement for deciding what to do first: a map of the systems and the manual work between them, up to six candidate initiatives scored on impact, effort and readiness, a build, buy or configure call on each, and a sequenced plan with a decision gate at every stage.

The roadmap
The written plan the client keeps, with the reasoning for every decision written next to it.
Current-state mapThe systems, the data flows and the workarounds, written down as a baseline the whole team recognises.Included
Scored initiatives and sequenced planEach candidate scored on commercial impact, effort and readiness, with a build, buy or configure call and an indicative band against each, sequenced into a twelve-month plan with a decision gate at every stage.Included

Key Assumptions

  • Priced as a single fixed-fee package: the lines above are what the engagement is made of, not a menu of separately priced components.
  • Two workshops covering one business unit, with up to six initiatives scored. A multi-stakeholder program is a strategy engagement and is quoted separately.
  • Indicative bands against each initiative come from the published pricing library; a fixed quote follows a Product Development Plan on the initiative chosen.
  • The fee is credited in full against the first initiative, a Platform Health Check included, or against a Product Development Plan, if either proceeds within 90 days.
  • The roadmap is the client's to keep and take elsewhere.

Decide what to do first.

Book a 30-minute call with an engineer. We confirm which part of the business the roadmap covers and who needs to be in the two workshops. The fee is invoiced after the call and credited in full against the first initiative, a Platform Health Check included, or a Product Development Plan if either proceeds within 90 days.
